A Letter to a Friend
Dear Li,
Now, I am sitting in the classroom. It is sunny outside, and I feel homesick. I think of you and all of my friends in China often. I miss everyone, and do you miss me and think of me often?
I have a hectic life in New York. I live in an apartment with my mother and brother. The apartment is small, and I share a bedroom with my mother. Since I came here, I have never given up my studies even though I am over age in a regular high school. Two months ago, I graduated from a high school, and now I study in Baruch College which is one of famous business college in New York City. I get up at 7:00 in the morning from Monday to Thursday. I always get dressed before I eat breakfast. For breakfast, I usually have milk and bread. I arrive at school on time for every class everyday because attending classes is a part of my grades in my report card. After school, I go directly home, but sometimes I hang out with my friends. And then, I usually spend my evening with my family. During the week, I work hard and sometimes I get discouraged. Most of the time, however, I feel good about my life.
Making new friends is one of my joyful things in New York. I have a best friend whose name is Yuan. She is an attractive girl. We are the same ages; therefore, we get a lot of similar thought. For example, we have the same goal which is no matter how demanding we are, we would finish our college and get a better job in our future. Her face is long and narrow. Her eyes are black and shining. Her hair is dark brown. She smiles a lot and usually has a friendly look on her face. She is not fat, and she is not thin. She has an average build. She does not dress up and she wears jeans and t-shirts. She has an interesting personality. She is fairly outgoing. For example, she likes to meet new people wherever she goes. In addition, she is very caring. I remember once I got sick for a long time. She called me and asked me to take medicine on time and sleep well. Also, she is diligent because she always gets the highest grades in my class. She is humorous, too. She loves to tell jokes. Often, I think of you when I play with her, because I think you are similar in many ways. And do you make new good friends in your life now?
There are many interesting places in the New York, and I have visited some different places, such as museums, parks, and gardens. Recently, in summer, I took a speech class in the Seek program. The teacher took us to the High Line. It is a place which has a long history in America. There, we can breathe fresh air, and see different kinds of beautiful flowers. When I walked from the beginning to the end, I felt my body was light because it made me really relax. In the High Line, we interviewed some people who love to stay there and come there often. They said they would have releases of delight when they sat there. Overall, I like it, too.
Someone said that I have changed a lot. However, I think that I am always who I was before. Only one thing I think I have changed is I am not been a weak, small girl. I have become a more independent and stronger girl. I remember how challenging it was when I came to the U.S. I studied in the day, and then I worked after school. I always ran faster than others everyday. Once, the weather was so hot that I fell in a faint when I stood in the street to hand out the leaflets under the hot sun. You know that before I was in China my mum never let me do the housework at home. So I find that I have grown up and I can support my family. I believe you also have become powerful and strong!
